Alcohol and substance detox at Purify™ is the first part of the award winning program of long term recovery at Hacienda Paradiso. The Purify detox program can be taken as a standalone detox or as the first part of the journey to comprehensive recovery and sobriety. For many, detox is one of the most unpleasant aspects of recovery and should never be attempted without medical supervision. Detox can be dangerous, even fatal.

The ultimate goal of Purify detox is to provide physiological healing from the ravages of addiction. The body is an amazing machine, and for most surviving addicts their bodies have suffered many years of chronic physical abuse. The award winning detox @ Purify™ is a comfortable and luxurious process. We’ll ease your detox using the most advanced medication assisted treatment in a combination tailored to your exact physiology. Purify detox often begins with a DNA test to identify which medication will work best with your body, so you can ease into the process safely, securely and under the best possible supervision. Detox at Purify™ usually lasts 7-10 days, depending on the amount of time you personally need to detox. Many clients then begin a comprehensive program of recovery at the main facility, Hacienda Paradiso although there are some other factors that will determine your length of drug and/or alcohol withdrawal. These include:

• Substance you are addicted to
• Length of time the addiction has lasted
• The depth of the addiction
• Your method of drug abuse such as snorting, smoking, injecting, or swallowing
• The amount of the substance you take at one time
• Family history of drug and/or alcohol misuse
• Genetic makeup
• Medical conditions and health
• Any underlying mental health conditions

Stages of Detox @ Purify™

Upon arrival guests find an oasis of calm, deep in a beautiful Spanish conservation area. The location of Purify detox in the heart of nature, complements our medically supervised detox with an abundance of fresh air, vitamin D from 330 days of yearly sunshine and a gentle daily detox routine of mild exercise, therapy and relaxation.

Our expert purify detox team ensure that most people will never experience the most severe symptoms, allowing their body to heal while we work on creating the optimal individualized treatment plan. This is done first by stabilization followed by a period of detoxification. Once stabilization is completed, the focus of a drug and alcohol detox program alters to monitoring and supporting the various processes of the body.

The body must expel the drugs and alcohol inside of it. A detox program will help with managing this typically unpleasant process known as withdrawal. Detox program are deployed to help the body heal following drug and/or alcohol addiction. Once this is done, you can transition into the next phase. Without detox, there is no moving onto the other aspects of rehab and recovery.

Acute withdrawal, the first week, will start soon after the addict stops drinking. This will usually be within a few hours, although this can vary based on the physiological factors and their alcohol consumption immediately before stopping. The range of symptoms can include anxiety and depression, tremors, nausea, vomiting, sweating, sleep problems and, in extreme cases, heart failure.

This will be followed by moderate symptoms which can be more severe. The body will attempt to expel toxins however it can. The patient may start sweating and feeling nauseous. They may also experience vomiting and diarrhea, and dehydration is a risk. Those who experience more severe symptoms might also suffer fever and confusion during this stage. This is also the point where the patient is likely to feel the psychological effects of withdrawal.

Alcohol especially is a depressant and, when it is constantly present in the system, the brain attempts to compensate for the depressant effect by increasing production of chemicals like dopamine. Now the substances have been removed dopamine production is frequently severely limited or even stopped, resulting in the patent feeling depression or anxiety.

Severe symptoms will start between two and four days and can include severe such as confusion and disorientation, seizures, tremors, and hallucinations. The most severe symptoms are delirium tremens, better known as DTs. Around five per cent of patients will experience these and they can have a mortality rate of between three and fifteen per cent. This means it’s essential alcohol detox is medically supervised.

After five days, the physical symptoms of withdrawal begin to subside, and are generally over between day seven and ten. The psychological effects of alcohol addiction, however, will last longer. Although the body can be quite efficient at processing and removing toxins, the changes to the brain will require more time, and more support, to repair. The medical support for detox itself is, however, largely responsive. It is there to ensure that risks or dangers are identified and managed promptly and appropriately.

Guests find comfortable hotel like rooms, state-of-the-art air conditioning regulates the room temperature according to guests needs (especially important during the early stages of detox when the human body cycles rapidly between sweats and chills. Clients find an outdoor gym, swimming pool, library, and Internet area at the detox. Guests have access to each area although in early detox most will simply take a gentle stroll in the fresh air if they can.
