Christian Counseling for Addiction & Substance Use Disorder
When it comes to addiction and substance abuse, people often desire to help the person affected, especially those who are close to them. However, it can be a difficult situation to navigate, especially with the complexities and nuances that come with substance abuse.
Here are some things to think about when trying to counsel those suffering from addiction and substance abuse disorder from a biblical perspective.
The person struggling is not defined by their struggle
Oftentimes, people struggling with addiction or substance abuse problems find themselves trapped in a loop. If they have attempted or are attempting to get out of their addiction and have failed, they find themselves feeling defeated, weak, and even worthless as the darkness of their addiction pushes inward. That is not how God sees them.
Behavior is strongly rooted in identity and when we focus our identity on our sin and struggles, we often find ourselves in a dark place. Instead, if you are trying to help someone through their addiction or substance abuse struggle, first establish that they are not defined by their struggle. Their identity is not completely wrapped up in what they struggle with. They are more than that.
It can be helpful to walk through Scriptures that talk about how God sees them like Ephesians chapter 1 or even the Gospel stories to see what lengths Jesus went to so that they could experience life.
Regular and consistent time with God is essential
God is the ultimate healer. We know from the Bible that God desires to heal His people and that He can heal afflictions that are far beyond our control and reach. The best thing for someone who is dealing with addiction or a substance abuse disorder is for them to spend consistent and regular time with God daily.
Firstly, being in the Word of God is great therapy. The Scriptures tell us that the Word is powerful and living. It pierces the heart and soul, changing us from the inside out by the power of God.
Secondly, when someone is consistently in prayer, they are forging a personal and genuine relationship with God that will bring healing and light into places that are filled with darkness.
Spending time in the Word and in prayer is also something to focus on other than the present addiction or substance abuse struggle. These two things are essential to one’s healing and growth.
Provide support and a shoulder to lean on
Recovering and healing from an addiction or substance abuse disorder is an extremely difficult thing to do and is nearly impossible to do alone. If you are close to someone who is struggling with something like this, be a pillar of support for them and be there when they fail.
They will need accountability, but they will also need love, compassion, and care. Above all, pray for them, support them, and love them as Jesus would love them.
Christian Rehab for Addiction Treatment
Christian rehab may be an option if you or a loved one is fighting addiction because some people’s rehabilitation is greatly influenced by their Christian beliefs.
Knowing what to expect from this type of faith-based program might help you make the best selection for your recovery. Firstly, Christian recovery clinics will place a major emphasis on God and faith and this is usually done using the twelve step program or a variation of it.
Individuals of Christian faith do tend to grasp the twelve step program which is also a Christian based program with God at it’s core. The twelve step program of recovery can be traced back to the Oxford Groups at the start of the last century.
At Christian Rehab you can anticipate taking part in Bible study, prayer, and worship and you’ll probably also have counseling that has a Christian angle or focus.
Participants are also asked to commit to sobriety, just like in non-Christian recovery. You can anticipate receiving evidence-based care along with additional resources and support for your rehabilitation.
