Castle Craig Rehab

Castle Craig Hospital has been providing luxury rehab care for over 30 years. The five-star rehab center was founded by Peter and Dr. Margaret McCann in 1988 and has acquired sister facilities in Ireland and the Netherlands. Situated in West Linton, south of Edinburgh, Scotland, guests have been calling on Castle Craig over the years for its dedicated detox and recovery treatment program.

The residential treatment center offers recovery for men and women seeking to free themselves from the chains of chemical dependency. Castle Craig Hospital offers a holistic treatment approach to clients in the isolated Scottish countryside. It also works with residents with co-occurring disorders, eating disorders, and addictions such as gambling.

Although 90 days of treatment is considered the “Golden Standard” at Castle Craig, clients can stay for as many as 10 weeks at a time.

Prior to treatment, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation and receive an individual treatment plan. Mobile phones and laptops are checked upon arrival, telephone privileges and access to computers are limited. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone and Librium, is used as needed and is available at Castle Craig, which uses a Minnesota model1 aimed at abstinence. The detox time varies, but typically lasts four to ten days, depending on stage of addiction and clients are monitored around the clock. Castle Craig is a Hospital and so all detoxes are medically managed on site.

In the first phase of care, four to five clients are assigned to a team of ten therapists. Each client takes part in a three-day group and the treatment lasts six to ten weeks. The weekly treatment includes three days of physical therapy, two to three hours of cognitive behavioral therapy and three to four hours of psycho-social therapy per day.

There is a women’s group dealing with gender issues, and there are also meetings for men and women on issues related to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and dissociative disorders.

The hospital employs 34 staff including nurses, social workers, doctors, nurses, psychologists and nurses. Dual diagnosis is available. Residents undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy in an oxygen chamber where they breathe in pure oxygen under pressure for up to three hours a day, seven days a week and a total of six weeks a year.

Other alternative therapies include art, and there is a gym available, and exercise is an important part of the program. Castle Clinic is a 12 Step facility.
